How Patrick Dempsey Became The Brand Ambassador For Porsche Design Eyewear
Let’s face it, high-performance cars are impressive. In a word, high-level technological innovation, and intelligent function catch the interest of men. And when it comes to American men, quite often cars reflect their personality as well as their imagination. Most men are interested in testosterone-fueled conversations about vehicle performance. In fact, men are more likely to purchase vehicles that exude power. In my research I have found that guys who appreciate cars like to assert their masculinity as well as their economic power.
At present, a new take on the classic design is ripe for revolution. In January 2021, in Stuttgart/Munich, Patrick Dempsey has been named the brand ambassador for Porsche Design Eyewear. Given his great passion for motorsport, he reflects the culture of the world’s first ever sunglasses (P’8479) with interchangeable lens mechanism created by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche in 1978. Following his vision to take the principles and myth of Porsche beyond the automotive world, Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche created the Porsche 911. More to the point. his philosophy and design language can still be seen in all Porsche Design products today.
The P’8928 is a modern, squared aviator style, featuring a distinctive and edgy look that exudes power and style. The partnership between Porsche and Dempsey is commemorated in a special way with the limited P’8928 P collector’s edition. The color combination of the limited edition, dark grey and black, is a tribute to Patrick Dempsey’s elegant style and the sunglasses’ color code is titled “P”, named after Patrick.
“The classic design is iconic while evolving with technology. I really love the elegant color palette of the lenses”, says Patrick Dempsey.
MORE FOR YOU
I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Patrick Dempsey about his relationship with Porsche Motorsport, how it was a nice progression to be able to tell the story in a practical way and how you want someone to look at you and go that is a man that has good taste!
Joseph DeAcetis: Could you briefly talk to Forbes about the optical performance of the glasses from your personal stance and how that relates to you as a consumer as well as the ambassador of the brand.
Patrick Dempsey: There are some glasses that you feel look great when you put them on but when you are out in the sun there is this weird glare and you can’t see clearly. With these lenses, I feel like it gives me the depth of feel that I like as well as protecting me from the sun. The sun can be really harsh here in California especially in the afternoon so it gives you the ability to see the little details. If you’re in a rally, or something of that nature, you are pushing the car a little more aggressively than usual and you want to be able to scan the terrain and you need good visibility. If you’re in a convertible, and you have a lot of stuff coming at you, you need to protect your eyes and that is what I like best. I do not like a frame that is too heavy and that moves around. The sunglasses that I have are lightweight due to the titanium and they don’t ride too heavy on the bridge of my nose with the lenses also being really good in changing conditions.
JD: How did the ambassadorship come about?
PD: I think it came about due to my relationship with Porsche Motorsport, certainly my experience in racing, and it was a nice progression to be able to tell the story in a practical way and in the way these glasses were meant to be used. I have had a good relationship with Porsche Motorsport now for a number of years. I had done some things in 2014 with Porsche Design and now I have come back to do this campaign with the eyeglasses.
JD: Could you speak about the iconic design with respect to Porsche and the eyewear? Specifically, with you being that you are widely known as a sexy symbol.
PD: No matter what it is, you want something that makes you feel in your power and something that feels that you are not trying too hard. You want something that feels organic to you and when searching for the right pair of sunglasses and being able to tell yourself, these are comfortable. It makes you feel good. You’re not always looking in the mirror so you want something that is practical. If you go out of the house feeling confident, people will feel that and radiate that. Every individual is different but I think that that is what everyone is looking for, the right frame that fits their style and personality.
JD: What is your take on dressing for success and corporate ascension in respect to sunglasses for American men?
PD: When you are in a position like that, people are judging every aspect of what you’re wearing because that is going to affect your leadership qualities, your attention to detail and whether or not you can be a leader or potential leader for that company. If you are dressing confidently, are you focused on every detail? That’s projecting how you’re going to lead a company or how you’re going to be a role model in that company. You want to wear something that is quality and that will project that nature. When you are walking down the street, you want someone to look at you and go that is a man that has good taste, who looks sophisticated and that there is some intelligence there as you can see the thought that was put in.
JD: As the brand ambassador for the Porsche Eyewear line, do you have any involvement in the design process?
PD: I have not as of yet but I would love to be a part of the design process and really dive deep into how you design the product, going to market, and going to the factories to see how it is developed. I take the existing product and examine and see which looks fit my lifestyle and are best suited for my face structure and all that.
JD: Are there any particular models that you gravitate towards?
PD: Yes, the P8928 is good because you are able to change the lenses. You have to get the right sized frames because they have created this app now that if you cannot go into a physical store, you can figure out what size and style you would like. I like that so much because it is so versatile and you do not have to carry around a couple pairs. If there is some harsh sun you can go with the darker lens or if there is an overcast you can go with a lighter lens.
JD: Have you noticed any comparisons from the first line that came out and this particular new release?
PD: The great thing about Porsche in general is that if you look at the early 911 and you look at the 356, that silhouette is still the same and that applies to the look of the sunglasses. That DNA remains in these sunglasses. The coveted early sunglasses from the 70’s is looked at as a great heirloom to have even so much so that a good friend of mine talks about how he still has his dads has his pair from back in the day and he really wants the new pair. I think it is such a great thing that it reminds him of his dad that is no longer here and he wants to continue to carry on. The great thing is you can buy something that is a big investment but you will have it for a long time that is timeless and iconic.
